Why I'm building this one small.

From 2010 to 2023, I built a Wilmington tax and accounting practice to $2 million+ in annual revenue. By most measures it worked. It grew every year, it had a good reputation, and I sold it.

But somewhere in the growth, my job stopped being tax work. I spent my time on hiring, reviews, capacity planning, software decisions, and the hundred operational questions that come with running a firm that size. Client work moved down the org chart. I was reviewing returns instead of preparing them, and reviewing them for clients I had never spoken with.

That's not a criticism of the firm or the people in it. It's what scale requires, and the model works. It just isn't the work I wanted to be doing.

So this practice is built around that constraint instead of against it. Capped, so the number of clients is a decision. Priced so planning is the product rather than something squeezed in between returns. Small enough that the person who signs your return is the person who knows your situation.

I'm a husband and the father of two teenage boys. Most of what I do outside the office involves being outdoors, sports, reading, or cooking.
